An Introduction to Digital Library and Cataloging Systems

Event Details

At last week’s inaugural showcase, we demonstrated numerous ways to re-enchant the intangible earth of Cyberspace. This leaves many of us with more questions than answers: what is required to realize that better world? How do we prepare for what will be required of us to make that journey? The Promethean myth tells us that knowledge of our surroundings is the first step forward so, this week, we will be taking a closer look at the intercity Digital Library project that was showcased last week.

Our Digital Library provides free access to over 1,500 DRM-free books, zines, and other literature for your reading pleasure and education. You can download the literature of interest to you and take it with you! Included in our Library are hundreds of comprehensive resources that describe the mechanisms and functioning of the various digital tooling we use every day. The Digital Library itself runs on Free Software called Calibre, which provides cataloging functionality, metadata retrieval, Web-based distribution, and more out-of-the-box. Free software plugins (written in Python) can provide additional features, such as DRM removal. We will also provide an introduction to Free Software “enterprise-class” Integrated Library System (ILS) tools for those working in public or private libraries and organizations with similar needs.

As always, there will also be opportunities to meet and talk with fellow participants about their own interests and projects. Come with questions, and bring a laptop or your smartphone to experience first-hand a glimpse into a more optimistic, holistic technological future.
